It’s that time of year again for our 12th Annual Critter Rescue Roundup on August 6th and 7th. Saturday hours are 9am-4pm and Sunday hours are 10am-3pm. This year we will have many new and returning organizations represented.
Along with the wolves and hedgehogs, we’ll have live raptors, reptiles, dogs and cats of every size, shape and color. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (Sunday only 11am-3pm), Nature’s Educators-wild bird program and Rocky Mountain Wildlife-Wolves will be on hand and this is your chance to get up close and personal with some fun and unusual animals.

We will have 12 animal rescue groups and if you adopt a rescue animal, you’ll receive free admission to the Dinosaur Resource Center for a family of four for a future return visit. Wally’s Tamales-Beer Brats & Tamacos, Lorenzo-Indian Tacos, Fry Bread, Sweet Spots (Saturday), Hamburgers and hot dogs (Sunday) and Edible Cotton’s-Cotton candy will be here with great food for you to purchase. Remember all groups will have booths outside and are free to see and share. Check out our website for a complete list of participants.

It’s a huge week-end for Woodland Park with the 31st Annual Mountain Arts Festival also happening on Aug. 6th and 7th at the Ute Pass Cultural Center right across the street from the Dinosaur Resource Center.
Vino and Notes, Woodland Park’s annual wine tasting and music event will also be taking place on the 6th from Noon-6pm at Woodland Station on Highway 24 in downtown Woodland Park. A complimentary shuttle will be available on Saturday the 6th at the Woodland Park High school parking lot for your convenience. The shuttle will be making stops at all three events throughout the day. Parking is limited downtown and we encourage you to take advantage of the shuttle. Once you are downtown, all events are within walking distance from each other. There is something for everyone this week-end in the City above the Clouds so come spend a week-end in Woodland Park.
FROM THE EDUCATION DESK
School is fast approaching! Hardly seems believable does it? It has been a great summer at the museum but much too short for me.

FYI:
Quadruple Triceratops Dig
Peter Larson, President of the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research, says triceratops fossils are extremely rare. Finding four of them together in one spot is especially significant because the skeletons are normally found alone. Larson feels that this discovery tells scientists more about the animals` behavior.

“They were not solitary animals as we had thought for a long time,” Larson says. “But actually in this particular instance this was probably a family group because all four animals are a little bit different size. We have a couple of adults, or one full adult, one sub-adult, and two animals which you would classify as small sub-adults and perhaps a large juvenile. This find will tell us not only about some behavior which we did not know before, but it will also show us how these animals changed as they grew.”

Larson feels it is possible that triceratops were mostly solitary but stayed in family groups for a time as they grew into adulthood.

“It plays into something that’s pretty important to us all, and that is understanding the climate of the past, how climate changes, and what the consequences of rapid climate change can be,” Larson goes on to say.

The excavation has been underway since 2012, with help from paleontologists with Naturalis Biodiversity Center in the Netherlands where the four skeletons will go on display together.
