Big news for RMDRC! We will be unveiling our newly completed ceratopsian skeleton on Sept.16th at 10:00AM. The skull of this animal has been on display in the dino hall for several months while the body was being worked on, now be among the first to see what ongoing research indicates is a completely new genus of dinosaur similar to the primitive Avaceratops and Nasutoceratops. This will be press event followed by a special presentation by the RMDRC curator Anthony Maltese. As always members admitted free.
SIGN UP NOW! This fall we have a very special event on October 17th to cap off Earth Science Week! Geoscientist, Steve Veatch, will present a 4 hour class on Basic Paleontology. You must preregister for the 4 hour, private class which will include a tour of the museum through Steve’s eyes. The class is for ages 12 and older and class size is limited and will cost $20.00 plus museum admission on that day. Current members will receive free admission as usual but must pay for the class. Scientists have discovered a new species of horned dinosaur based on fossils collected from a bone bed in southern Alberta, Canada. Wendiceratops pinhornensis was about 20 feet long and weighed more than a ton. It lived about 79 million years ago, making it one of the oldest known members of the family of large bodied horned dinosaurs that includes Triceratops. Dr. Michael Ryan and Dr. David Evans co-authored this study and both described the find.
Over 200 bones representing the remains of at least four dinosaurs (three adults and one juvenile) were collected. Its most distinctive feature is a series of forward curling hook-like horns along the margin of the wide, shield-like frill that projects from the back of its skull. The new find ranks among other recent discoveries in having some of the most spectacular skull ornamentation in the horned dinosaur group. Dr. David Evans says, “Wendiceratops helps us understand the early evolution of skull ornamentation in a group of dinosaurs characterized by their horned faces.” The wide frill is ringed by numerous curled horns, the nose had a large, upright horn, and it is likely there were horns over the eyes also. The number of frill projections and horns makes it one of the most striking horned dinosaurs ever found. Neck frills and horns were probably used to communicate with and intimidate other dinosaurs. They may have had pushing matches with their horns like antelopes and sheep of today. Although the complete shape of the nasal bone is unknown, it is clear that it was a upright nasal horncore. This represents the earliest documented occurrence of a tall nose horn in Ceratopsia.
The name means “Wendy’s horned-face” and celebrates Alberta fossil hunter Wendy Sloboda, who discovered the site in 2010. This is a well deserved honor for Ms. Sloboda, who has discovered hundreds of important fossils in the last 30 years, including several new species. Ms. Sloboda splits her time between fossil hunting and sports photography. |

Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum is scheduled for a Sept. 26, 2015 grand opening. Canada’s newest world class museum will offer helicopter tours over one of the world’s most concentrated bone-bed sites. The 15 minute ride will showcase aerial views of the museum, Pipestone Creek and Wapiti River, and go through heavily wooded terrain to the mass grave site of dinosaurs buried millions of years ago. Spread across the size of a football field, two catastrophic floods millions of years ago created a mass grave where over 3000 bones have so far been recovered from an estimated hundreds of dinosaur herds. It is also the site that revealed the first co-occurrence of insects in amber and dinosaur fossils that inspired many Hollywood blockbusters. Numerous footprints and skin impressions have been discovered, indicating that multiple dinosaur species frequented the region, including unnamed carnivorous ones related to Velociraptors.

The Dinosaur Resource Center’s “Dinosaur Nerds,” led by uber-nerd paleo twerp Jacob Jett, have launched a YouTube channel. For our 6th Native American Day at the RMDRC, we will have the world famous Seven Falls Dancers returning to dance at 1:00pm and 2:30pm on the plaza in front of the museum.

From 10:00am-3:30pm, the Rocky Mountain Wildlife Foundation’s Mark Johnson will be on hand with live wolves along with the Thelma and Flash Hedgehog Rescue. Several artists will have their work on exhibit and items such as fine art, jewelry, dream catchers, Navajo rugs and beadwork, service dog training, bath products and dinosaur and animal paintings and more may be purchased. Food will be available from NT Sliders and Lorenzo’s Navajo Tacos and Fry Bread booths. This has become an annual event for the RMDRC so come out for a fun day on the last official week-end of summer. See our website for the complete list of participants.

The annual Cruise Above the Clouds Car Show will be held Sept. 12th in Woodland Park and Sept. 13th in Cripple Creek. Over 250 cars were here last year and the Cruise above the Clouds car club is expecting record numbers of cars to be entered again this year. This is your opportunity to enter 2 car shows in one week-end. There will be many activities as usual, come spend a week-end in the mountains enjoying the beauty of classic and custom vehicles. The Woodland Park Chamber of Commerce will celebrate their annual Oktoberfest across the street from the RMDRC at the Ute Pass Cultural Center and outdoors at the Midland Pavilion on Sept.19th and 20th. September 17th-20th is the Denver Gem and Mineral Show held at the Merchandise Mart in Denver. This is a huge annual event featuring world class fossils, minerals and gems on display and for sale. The RMDRC will have activities set up in the children’s area along with Dinosaur Ridge and the Morrison Museum. If you love minerals and fossils this is your opportunity to see and purchase some of the best specimens available.
The staff of RMDRC will have a booth at other events around the area in September and October. We will be at the “What If Festival of Imagination and Innovation” in downtown Colorado Springs on September 19th and at Cool Science Festival at UCCS Oct.3rd. These are all great events for the family, come on out and stop by our booth and say hi.

Sat. October 24th will be our Halloween Show…”Spooky Tales” with Denise Gard and her dog Sienna. Show will start at 1:30pm. Be sure and dress in costume as prizes will be given for: Best Dinosaur costume, the Scariest costume, the Funniest costume and the Most Creative costume. There will be a parade through the museum right after the show. Don’t forget your camera! Treat Bags will be given to all children. Event runs from 1:30pm-3:00pm. Come and have a spooky good time!!!
