Our Halloween program with Cool Science was fun, spooky and entertaining and culminated with a costume contest. Our tour guide Stephen Woolf, dressed as our mascot Rolling Thunder, led the visitors in a parade around the museum. Following the costume parade, $10.00 gift cards were awarded for best dinosaur, funniest, prettiest and scariest costumes. This year’s winners are posted below.

FYI:
One of the biggest dinosaur footprints ever to be discovered has been found in the Gobi Desert, an arid region that spans northern China and southern Mongolia. The print is believed to belong to a titanosaur,a long necked plant eating dinosaur. These were some of the heaviest animals ever to walk the earth, weighing up to 70 tons. It was found by a Mongolian-Japanese expedition and is 30 inches across and 42 inches in length. The team feels it can gain new information about titanosaurs from this discovery. This was the last group of sauropods who roamed the earth 90-66 million years ago and the same group as the Brachiosaurus. The desert where the print was found is now covered in sand, but when dinosaurs were here, it was probably soft and muddy and that is why the print was preserved so well.
“This is a very rare discovery with imprints of its claws,”said the researchers in a statement from Okayama University of Science.
Several massive prints have been found around the world. In 2015, large footprints were found on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, which are believed to have also been made by sauropods. They measure 27 inches in diameter and were the first sauropod tracks to be found in Scotland. In August 2016, the largest ever carnivorous prints were found in Bolivia. They were 45 inches wide and believed to be tracks from an Abelisaurus….a cousin of the Tyrannosaurus rex. These dinosaurs are thought to have lived around 70 million years ago. Prints were also uncovered in France in 2009 which ranged from 4.6ft-4.9ft. in diameter and are thought to belong to sauropods.
